Visioning
the Future of Island Oak, by Jane Kilthei
Over the past few months
the Island Oak community has been engaging in a visioning process as
the school looks at the next stages of its development and
growth. This process builds on a school assessment that was done
in 2003 by Gary Ward. The purchase of the school building was a
big step in opening up possibilities for the future. The school
has also grown to the size where the next stage of organizational
development is needed. Island Oak is moving forward with the
intention of putting the necessary systems in place for the larger
school it is becoming, while consciously retaining the warmth and
personal connections that are such an important part of the school’s
character.
Grade nine parent Larry Lenske led various groups in
the school, including the board, the faculty, a group of Island Oak
parents and the student body, as well as a group of parents and faculty
from Sunrise school, through a
process that identified the school’s challenges as well as its
strengths and resources.
The process culminated in
a joint board and faculty session on April 20th that
reviewed all of the visioning to-date and moved forward with working
groups on practical areas such as:
- enhancing the curriculum
in areas as diverse as sports, sciences, trades and the performing arts,
- building a parent
volunteer network to support all aspects of the school,
- enrollment and
fundraising, and
- improving the internal
and external space in which learning takes place, making a plan for
both short and long-term improvements.
Supporting the school’s
administration and faculty in the good work they are already doing was
identified as a critical element of any future vision, as well as
supporting board development to keep pace with the needs of a larger
school.
Mick Marrison presented
plans for renovating and adding to the school building in stages.
The plan is to work on the first stage this summer when school is not
in session. If you have building skills and some time to donate
over the summer months, contact Mick or one of the Board’s new
volunteer coordinators, Aisha Sawchuck and Joanna Kit-Fraser.
Aisha and Joanna will also be contacting parents to find out who might
have time and skills to donate more generally and what school events
people are interested in participating in.
There is also a plan
afoot to purchase Regina Montag’s property, which is right next door to
the school. This will allow for the development of space for outdoor
sports which is very much needed, as well as give the school room for
future expansion. Board Treasurer Diane Dous and Larry Lenske are working on the
financial and legal details that will make it possible for parents and
other supporters to invest in this project. If you are interested
contact Diane or Larry.
Third
Annual Integrated Sports Day
On Friday May 27th the grade 11 students need to
be at the Moose Lodge on Moose Road
(off Lakes Road)
at 8:30 am.
Everyone needs to participate as we set up for the various
events to start at 9:30 am. As part of their community service, they will
be helping to coordinate the different events, serve food and
participate in some fun games. We
anticipate having about 60 special needs participants, some for Cowichan
High School, and others from
various day programs in the area. After
the games are over, we will have a half hour lunch break, then the
awards presentation ceremony. This will
end about 2:00 pm, when the
students will be dismissed. This is
approximately one hour later than regular dismissal time.
Please pick up at the Moose Lodge.
Spectators are welcome. Come out
and cheer on the games! Grade 11 parents are also welcome and needed to
help out on the day, so please contact Lynda if you can be there.

Bottle
Drive – Drivers and Sorters needed, submitted by Erika Young
We are having a
bottle drive on May 23, 2005 the Monday of
the long weekend. It is to win a contest that we have been in since
November. We are currently in 2nd place. It is from 10am to 2pm.
We are looking for divers with vans and station wagons. We
are also looking for people willing to sort. Any help would be
great. If you are interested in helping out call 715-1737 and ask for
Erika or email erika_y88@hotmail.com. If you
can’t help out on May 23, you can still bring in your bottles or cans
to the (or receipts from the bottle depot near the Cowichan Valley Inn)
to the school until the end of May, when the contest ends.
Thanks for your support!

S.O.S., submitted by Hazel
Nielson
It's "grad" time and support with
decorating materials would be so much appreciated. Could you
contact me if you have any of the following to lend for a few days?
- large piece of fabric - any colour
- vases - large and small
- tiny white fairy lights
- extension cord
- screen - wood, wicker, painted or plain or
fabric, any size.
- FLOWERS and greenery
These items would all be
labeled and returned to you. Items could be collected or you
could leave them at school for me to pick up. Grad is Friday, May
20th, so items could be collected any time, except flowers - Thursday
a.m. would be great.
Please call me if you can help out
or if you have suggestions - I'd very much appreciate your
support. This is a special time - made even more special by
involvement and support. Thanks for thinking about it.
Hazel - 748-8489

Rower's Corner, by Emily Harris
Brentwood
Friday was heats. The wind started picking up and after three boats
broke, they suspended racing for a couple of hours, so many of the
races
scheduled for that day were moved to Saturday morning. The race was
1500 meters.
Tobias and Max's novice quad just held off the other boat for gold, and
Emily and Esther's novice quad received silver. The rest of the club
also did well receiving silver in the junior boy's double and junior
girl's
four and bronze in the junior girl's quad. Maple Bay placed fifteenth
overall out of thirty-four clubs.
Shawnigan Lake
Saturday morning was the novice girl's doubles heats. Esther
and
Marissa placed second in their heat and were third in the final. The
novice
girl's quad with Emily and Esther won their heat. Tobias and Max's
novice quad
won gold in their final. The same quad also rowed up a few categories
in
the junior A varsity and placed fourth, which was impressive, since
they
were rowing against people who were older and had been rowing for
longer.
Emily won gold her novice single and promptly hopped into the novice
quad
with Esther to come third in the final. The Shawnigan Lake regatta was
2000
meters long.

Attention all Host Parents and
Teachers: Host Parent Group, submitted by Natasha Nettleton
I am in the process of organizing a host parent support
group. My goals are:
- to create a support network for host parents, that is also open
to all parents and teachers who wish to join.
- to create a regular gathering opportunity for host parents.
(bi-weekly?, monthly?)
- to create an environment where we can not only support each
other, share our experiences, but I believe most importantly, have
a united base that develops solutions to issues and challenges
that can come with hosting boarding students.
During these gatherings, I would like see if, as a collective
group, we can assist the school on a deeper level with the process by
which we integrate students into our families. Ultimately, I
believe we can all benefit from support. Some ideas I have are:
- E-mailed pictures of Duncan, the home/room/family they will be
living with, so that the students have a clear picture of where they
will be staying in Canada.
- A monthly host parent/exchange student event (hike, movie
theater night, etc, suggestions welcome). This could be a great
opportunity for students who come in the summer and do not know anyone
yet.
- A collectively created set of guidelines and boundaries
that will help the students make a harmonious integration into our
homes and school.
- Any and all suggestions will be welcomed and discussed.
Mark your calendars as our first gathering will take place at the
school on Tuesday, May 24 at 7pm. There will be
refreshments, but feel free to bring goodies to munch on. Feel
free to call anytime 746-4372.
Sincerely,
Natasha and David Nettleton (current host parents of Gudmund and
Johannes)

Thoughts on next year,
Lesley Joy
Everyone can help Island Oak to be a great success
next year. It only takes an hour.
On Sunday, June 5th at 3:30 pm, a group of parents,
teachers and students will gather in Room one at the school.
Sitting in a circle, anyone who wants to can say a
wish (one word or a short phrase) for Island Oak's next academic year,
September 2005-06. For example, you might want to wish for
"enrolment" or "healthy teachers" or "???".
Then we'll sit in silence for 20 - 30 minutes.
That's all! (no experience necessary)
Please come to help next year be even better than
this one.
