Welcome Back!
What a glorious summer we are enjoying. One more week to go, then back to alarm clocks, sleepy teenagers, carpooling, bus schedules, bicycles and DON’T FORGET YOUR LUNCH!
On the first day of school we will join with the students, staff and parents of Sunrise Waldorf School for an opening ceremony to start the new school year. This is the first time we have joined together on the first day of school and we plan to share many more such occasions throughout the year.
Please be at Sunrise prior to 8:30 on Sept. 6th. If you are unable to attend, or to arrange transportation for your son/daughter please call Lynda at the school. We have several staff members and parents who will be able to transport students to and from Sunrise, but we need advance notice to ensure we have enough vehicles. After the ceremony we will depart for Island Oak and have a regular day. Classes are the same as last year commence at 8:30 and end at 2:55 except on Friday when dismissal is 1:00 pm. (see enclosed timetable)
All School Meeting
On Tuesday Sept. 13 at 7:00 pm is the first parent evening of the year. It is very important that each family be represented as many important topics will be discussed as well as various announcements and plans for individual classes. Please make every effort to attend this meeting, if you absolutely cannot we suggest you arrange for a class parent who will be attending take notes on your behalf so that you can be fully informed.
School Trip to Camp Pringle
You may recall that you received a letter with the June report cards outlining the Sept. trip to Hornby Island. These plans have been changed and we will now be going to Camp Pringle on Shawnigan Lake. We will travel there on the afternoon of Wednesday Sept. 14th and return on Friday Sept. 16th. We will stay in dormitories and provide our own food. The students will enjoy a variety of water sports, as well as special group activities being planned by the teachers. The cost per student will be approximately $100.00, possibly less, certainly not more. This includes all the meals. You will receive more details about this in a package with permission forms, camp list etc.
Terry Fox Run
Hilary Walkley and Peter Morris (Sunrise teacher) are organizing this fundraising event for the Terry Fox Foundation. Students from both schools will participate. As Hilary is on her way back from the Yukon where she was working this summer we do not have any details as yet, they will be included in the next newsletter the first week of school.
Fundraising Presentation
Barbara Richards of "A Touch of Class" Fundraising Auction Services will be giving a presentation to the Board of Directors on Sept. 21st at 4:00 pm at the school. Her area of expertise is working with charities to raise large sums of money through "gala" events. The opportunity to meet with Barbara is very exciting and we hope to be able to plan an event that will bring a substantial profit to the school. If we find we can in fact commit to such a plan, we will choose a local charity to share the event and profits with as part of our commitment to more community service from our school. If you are interested in this project, please join us for this presentation. If you would like to know more about Barbara and company, Lynda has a portfolio from her in the office.
Renaissance Faire
Late last spring tentative plans were made to have a Renaissance Faire in Sept. at the Cobble Hill Fair Grounds. After consideration, the Board of Directors has decided to post-pone the fair until the spring, however we will proceed with the annual Medieval Banquet for the third year. We hope to have the banquet closer to Halloween but still at the Cobble Hill Hall. We have not been able to confirm the new date yet; it will be announced in the next newsletter.
E-mail addresses
This year we would like to continue with e-mailing the newsletter to as many families as possible. If you address has changed, or we do not have an e-mail address for you as of yet, please contact Lynda in the office so you can be added to the list. We feel that communicating to parents through the e-mail is more efficient, less labour intensive and most importantly less paper!
School Handbooks
Included in this package is the Parent Handbook updated for 2005-2006. The students will receive handbooks during advisor classes, and the advisor will review the handbook with them. A very important aspect of the handbook is the page pertaining to channel of communication. We are committed to open communication with students and parents, please refer to this page if you have questions or concerns so that you know how to address any issues which may arise. This will also be addressed at the Parent evening on Sept. 13th.
Annual General Meeting
The A.G.M. of the Steiner Educational Society will be held on Oct. 5th. There are several positions which will be left vacant either through resignations, or the terms of office will have expired. If you are interested in joining the board, the following positions are available:
- Secretary
- President
- Members at large
Adrienne Brown, Vice-President is coordinating nominations. If you have questions about the positions available and the process for nomination, please call her at 748-7471.
School Phone Book
In the first advisor class, a draft of each class phone list will be reviewed with the students to ensure the information is correct. If you have changes to your phone number or address since registration for this school year, please contact Lynda.
